People sometimes ask why I don’t seek the DFL endorsement. Since 2005, Ward 2 in Minneapolis — where I serve on the city council — has been independent from the established DFL party in Minneapolis, allowing our community to pursue truly progressive agendas without influence or censure from the often more conservative DFL party leaders. I’ve enjoyed a warm and productive relationship with my DFL colleagues and supporters while remaining independent within the city’s political infrastructure.

In the fall of 2022, hundreds of rideshare drivers came to City Hall to tell us about their poverty wages and exploitative work conditions, and advocated for Council to pass policies guaranteeing them the wages and protections that they, like all workers, deserve. Since that day, we have stood alongside drivers as the co-authors of the Minneapolis Fair Drives, Safe Rides ordinances.

Two years ago, I was elected as Minneapolis’ first Black Democratic Socialist City Council member. As a candidate, I boldly advocated for a socialist vision where racist, violent cops and corporate lobbyists no longer run our city. A movement of working people should be the driving force at City Hall. I knew winning my election was only the first step in building independent political power in Minneapolis. Governing while keeping my humanity has not been easy.

Right now, thousands of Minneapolis workers are unable to pay rent and support their families because of the race to the bottom by massive corporate rideshare companies Uber and Lyft.

By Cam Gordon Police won’t be moving back into the Third Precinct building at East Lake St. and Minnehaha Ave. that was set ablaze after the murder of George Floyd by Third Precinct officers. After looking at citizen comment, Mayor Jacob Frey and the Minneapolis City Council announced in July that they will delay plans to locate a new or renovated police station in the southside.

Two weeks ago a majority of the City Council looked a room full of Indigenous East Phillips residents in the eyes and voted to move forward with the Hiawatha Expansion Project at the Roof Depot site. Once again, Minneapolis is forcing East Phillips to bear the brunt of our city’s pollution.
