Wisconsin’s state government is struggling to achieve even its most basic goals, according to agencies’ recent budget requests. Those requests include performance measures that the agencies get to select for themselves. Oftentimes agencies select easily achievable goals that seem to have little to do with their mission, and they yet still fall short.

Just recently the WMC Litigation Center—an affiliate of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC)—filed a lawsuit on behalf of two taxpayers against the town of Eureka, alleging the town’s permitting requirements for livestock farms are unlawful. And that they are. At least in my take, it’s just another example of “local control” gone wild.

The attempt to restore checks and balances in Wisconsin government by giving the power of the purse back to the legislature failed spectacularly earlier this month when voters overwhelmingly rejected two proposed constitutional amendments in the Fall Primary Election. One amendment would have prevented the legislature from delegating its constitutional authority to appropriate state funds.

The University of Wisconsin launched the opening salvo of the 2025-27 Wisconsin State Budget debate last week with its $855 million funding increase request. Gov. Evers initiated the budget process in June when he issued budget guidance to state agencies on June 7, 2024. The agency budget requests are due on Monday, Sep. 16, 2024. Agencies were basically instructed not to ask for any additional funding, except for the UW System. University leaders saw that as their opportunity to go for broke.

The Democrat Party is desperate to get the Green Party’s Presidential Candidate, Jill Stein, off the Wisconsin ballot, and the State Supreme Court is determined to do everything it can to help. The Democrat National Committee’s Deputy Operations Director in Wisconsin, David Strange, filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) on Aug. 15th to take the Green Party off the ballot for November.

Gov. Evers issued a press release on Wednesday giving Sen. Tammy Baldwin and Rep. Mark Pocan credit for the federal income tax Direct File Program, which was part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, despite their lack of direct involvement in its creation. The Direct File Program allows taxpayers to file their returns directly to the IRS online. The program will be available to Wisconsin taxpayers starting in 2025.
