In the summer of 2019, I was working in India for The New York Times, filling in for the Times bureau chief there, who was going on vacation for a month that summer. I took a brief break from my usual patch in Kabul, where I was bureau chief. A seasoned foreign correspondent, I loved working in India, where there are riveting stories wherever you turn, plus The Times had an impressive bureau there. One day, while jogging in New Delhi’s Lohdi Gardens, I was struck down by a seizure on the street.
