It’s been described as a defining moment for the Hunter. Newcastle Airport will host its first-ever direct flights to Perth, with QantasLink services launching from Monday 8 September. The route is expected to operate three times a week on Fridays, Sundays and Mondays with a 150-seat Airbus A319, bringing 900 weekly seats and more than 45,000 annually to and from Western Australia.

More than 1,200 flood insurance claims have been lodged from the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle LGAs in the past few days. That’s according to the Insurance Council Australia, as residents throughout the Hunter and Mid-North Coast begin the clean-up and recovery from last week’s flooding event. Insurers received almost 6,000 applications, an increase of about 1,000 since Monday, with the Mid-North Coast, taking in the Taree and Wingham Local Government Areas, submitting the most with 1,223.

In a blow to the unsettled Newcastle Jets, former prodigy Archie Goodwin took home the A-League Men’s (ALM) Young Footballer of the Year award this week. The 20-year-old striker, who departed the Hunter for Adelaide United at the start of the 2024/25 season, capped off a phenomenal debut year with the Reds. After struggling with injuries, and a lack of game time at Newcastle, Goodwin parted ways with his local outfit for greener pastures in South Australia.

A teenage boy has been charged after discharging a gel blaster firearm at a woman during an alleged domestic violence incident. Police were called to a home in Cessnock about 4.30pm on Tuesday 27 May following claims of an assault. It’s understood the 17-year-old damaged walls and household items before firing the weapon towards a female known to him. Thankfully, the woman was not physically injured as a result of the incident.
