In “Ted Lasso,” my favorite show of all time, Ted (the main character) tells a story about his dog Hank. It goes like this:Well, when I was three years old, I got attacked by our neighbor’s dog. I- I don’t remember it happening, but my mother said it was pretty… pretty scary, you know. I do remember being afraid of dogs while growing up though. Like, if I was at a friend’s house for a sleepover or something, they’d have to keep their family dog outside, otherwise I’d bawl my eyes out.

It was late spring in 1979 and my dad was looking for a new project. Well, that’s a bit superfluous. He was looking for more room for our growing family in our split-level ranch in rural Wisconsin. I remember him sitting at the dining room table, sketching out his ideas, running numbers and planning to convert our garage to living space and add a bigger, two-car garage with a workshop on the end. It was a big project—and looking back, I’m surprised he decided to be the general contractor of it.

The sun beat down on us as we left Cedar Point—the famous amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. My daughter and son had joined me for a day of scaring ourselves on world-class roller coasters. As we pulled back into my father-in-law’s house, my son said, “See you at the game in a couple hours.”“You bet,” I replied. I grabbed some dinner and caught up with the rest of the family.

Each afternoon, around 2 p.m., a man walks by the front of my office. He wears a backpack, broad-brimmed hat, and a smile. Each day I wave to him, and each day he waves back. I don’t know his name, don’t know his story, but I marvel at the dogged determination to “get his steps in” because his steps look more painful than mine. He is missing the bottom half of his left leg, using an artificial limb to move quickly along the sidewalk to wherever he goes each day.
