LION king Maro Itoje will be full of pride as he leads the British & Irish Lions as the legacy of rugby pioneer Clive Sullivan lives on. Itoje captains the Lions against Argentina on June 21 as he replicates the feat of pioneer Sullivan. Sullivan, whose parents hailed from Jamaica and Antigua, would make history in 1972 when he became the first Black man to captain any Great Britain team, leading them to their first and only Rugby League World Cup victory, scoring the deciding try in the final.

CRICKET figures were recognised in King’s Birthday Honours. Former England fast bowlers Devon Malcolm and David ‘Syd’ Lawrence were awarded for their service to cricket. Malcolm, currently the ECB’s Black Communities Liaison Officer, has been awarded an OBE for Services for Cricket and Diversity in Cricket, while Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer to play for England and who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, receives an MBE.
