1 INTRODUCTION The distribution of species varies remarkably, with some species restricted to a specific area, while others exhibit distributions that span continents. The reasons behind this variation in species distribution have been studied by ecologists and evolutionary biologists for many years, with climate being considered as a major factor affecting range size (Kearney & Porter, 2009).
