Vermouth is a type of fortified wine, which means it’s a wine that has had additional alcohol, often a grape spirit, added to it. It’s also an aromatized wine since it’s also infused with a meticulously curated blend of herbs and spices, featuring the distinctive bitterness of wormwood (see below). The result is an aromatic elixir that we call vermouth and that we drink alone in places like Catalonia, but which in most places on Earth is essential to classic cocktails like the Martini.

First of all, this post is not to brag. The bottle was not even mine. Rather, it was a gift solicited by some friends, since I was traveling back to Barcelona from Mexico, and they thought it could be found way cheaper at the duty-free shop than what it’s listed for in the US (it wasn’t). Rather, this post is about the question of whether a bottle of Tequila this pricey, one which is not typically even sold in Mexico, is worth its price.

Out of all the Mexican wines that I love and have enjoyed throughout the years, the L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah is remarkable for being affably inexpensive. Whenever I’m in Mexico, I try to drink more Mexican wines than any other variety (why would I pay import fees by buying European bottles I can get for way cheaper in Barcelona?) And while I also try US and Argentina wines, I have a sweet spot for those from the Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, like this here bottle.

Among the many wines I’ve enjoyed tasting from Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe, the Tablas stands out as a bottle that consistently delivers a remarkable experience. I first encountered this wine during a New Year’s Eve fishing trip in 2024, where we paired it with grilled meats. The wine was a hit with my in-laws, and since then, I’ve made it a staple for special occasions.

Among the world of Spanish white wines I’ve enjoyed exploring, the Allende Rioja Blanco stands out as a particularly remarkable find. I first tried this in Barcelona during dinner with some friends. It paired wonderfully with both Mexican food as well as with Spanish heavy and light dishes. What struck me immediately was its surprising body for a white wine – it’s genuinely hard to find white Riojas that are this well-balanced and unique.
