By Roger Crow, May 2025“Was there a point when Hollywood came calling, and if so, did you turn down some big roles?” I ask one of the greatest thesps of the past 60-odd years. “Er, no,” says Derek Jacobi, remarkably. He goes on to explain in detail how he didn’t have the looks or whatever quality for those star roles, though at one point, trivia fans, he’d co-starred in Dead Again, a fabulous 1991 movie which knocked Terminator 2 off the top of the US charts.

Director: Adam MarcusCast: Erin Gray, Kane Hodder, Steven WilliamsCertificate:By Roger CrowI’m not sure we needed another Friday the 13th movie by the time Jason Goes to Hell cropped up in video stores, but commerce suggested otherwise. This is the Final Friday, as the subtitle suggests, but of course it was nothing of the sort. The Ts and Cs for any stalk and slash movie involves T and A early on. Director: Jim IsaacCast: Kane Hodder, Lexa Doig, Lisa RyderCertificate: 15By Roger CrowThere’s something that happens to franchises once they reach the ninth or tenth movie. Director: Charles BandCast: Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Richard HerdCertificate: 15By Roger CrowTime-jumping, scar-faced bounty hunter Jack Deth zips back to 1984 to stop a criminal who can transform people into zombie-like creatures. That’s the premise behind this schlock sci-fi fantasy, which has been brushed up for a new audience, and a lot of original fans like me. One of the selling points is the refreshingly honest yack track between writer/director Charles Band and star Tim Thomerson.

Director: Kelly MarcelCast: Tom Hardy, Juno Temple, Chiwetel EjioforCertificate: 15By Roger CrowTom Hardy’s final turn as Eddie Brock, the journalist consumed by a shape-shifting ET, should have been just another fun knockabout threequel, but it turned out to be far more than that. Written and directed by Brit Kelly Marcel, one of the brains behind the first two Venom movies, she barely got a mention in UK media when the movie repeatedly topped the US box office last year.
