    My colleague Ken Don, who has died aged 80, was a passionate real ale brewer who played a key role in saving Maris Otter, considered the finest variety of malting barley. He spent most of his career at the Young’s Ram Brewery in Wandsworth, south London, where the ruling Young family was committed to cask-conditioned beer. Ken was born in Alloa, in Clackmannanshire, the son of Ian Don, who worked in a local glass factory, and his wife, Margaret (nee Cook).

    1 minute ago I arrived at Round Corner Brewing in Melton Mowbray on the day another small independent brewery had pulled down the shutters. Northern Alchemy in Newcastle said it had called in the administrators as it was overwhelmed by the rising costs of making beer. It’s a sadly familiar story and I wondered whether Round Corner would still be operating in the town’s historic cattle market.

    Martyn Cornell, the beer writer and acclaimed historian of brewing, has died suddenly at the age of 72 on the eve of the publication of his major study of the history of porter and stout. (He is pictured above, left in cap, with his brother Dave who runs the Poppyland Brewery in Norfolk.)Martyn had an international audience for his work. His books Beer: the Story of the Pint and Amber, Gold and Black, were translated into Italian, German, Danish and Spanish.
