In October 1781, General Rochambeau refused to accept Britain’s surrender at Yorktown, pointing instead to George Washington as the real victor of the historic siege. The French commander’s public gesture, deferring to the Americans on the field of battle, was an early sign of the enduring mutual admiration that would blossom between the people of our two countries. More than that, it paved the way to how both nations would come to regard one another.

Tout comme aujourd’hui, Washington était la capitale mondiale du réseautage et Jean Monnet, conscient de l’importance d’un appui américain pour espérer voir se concrétiser son rêve d’une Europe unie, a veillé à s’entourer de soutiens stratégiques. Son principal allié était John Foster Dulles, un vieil ami avec lequel il avait travaillé à la Société des Nations après la Première Guerre mondiale, et qui deviendra secrétaire d’Etat du président Dwight Eisenhower.

In May 2022, diplomats, lawmakers, and other guests gathered at the Embassy of France in Washington D.C. to watch ambassador Philippe Etienne unveil a green park bench – the kind found in any French jardin public. Its final destination will be Rock Creek Park, Northwest Washington’s 1,700 acres of sprawling parkland. The commemorative plaque paid tribute to the French statesman Jean Monnet, an avid user of the park’s many trails during his long stay in the American capital.
