It was a remarkable stand-off. On Saturday morning, a number of cars carrying Chinese executives from Jingye, the parent company of British Steel, showed up at the main gate of its Scunthorpe plant. But workers, fearful that the delegation was trying to force the closure of Britain’s last remaining “virgin steelworks”, refused to let them in. Police were called. Eventually, the executives went home.
