Two offshore windward/leeward races at the 2024 Nautilus Marine Insurance Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship (SSORC) decided the SSORC champions for this year in conditions that were as brilliant as yesterday’s, with more sunshine and a north-easterly sea breeze beckoning. Today’s start was north of Sow and Pigs Reef on Sydney Harbour, set by Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC), organiser of the SSORC. The three divisions were away from 11am.

The Australian Sailing Team is excited to see the summer of sailing in Australia kick off with the three iconic regattas, Sail Melbourne, Sail Sydney, and Sail Brisbane. These events have long been pivotal in fostering local talent and attracting international competitors, and their importance is even greater as we look ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and a home Olympics for Brisbane 2032.

A fleet of 108 yachts is set to take on the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s (CYCA) 79th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race (RSHYR) on 26 December at 1300 hours. Previous Tattersall Cup winners including defending champion Alive, Centennial 7 (previously Celestial), Love & War, and Unicoin (won as Assassin) are in the fleet. Love & War is a classic yacht and one of a trio to win the race three times. This year, Phillip Kurts, son of owner, Simon Kurts, is her skipper for the first time.

Three of the best teams in the Australian 18 Footers League’s 2-024-25 season fleet put on a great exhibition of power, speed racing in a 25-30 knot nor’easter on Sydney Harbour last Sunday with only a few secs separating them for more than two-thirds of the long course, but it was the team which finished fourth behind the ‘stars’ that became the story of the day.

The reality of the imminent 5500 nautical mile Melbourne Osaka Cup double handed yacht race has bitten as crews, many of them family members, prepare for their qualifying races – the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) Melbourne to Hobart and Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht races, ahead of the big race in March. First held in 1987, 25 yachts are entered for the ninth running of the Melbourne Osaka Cup (the only south-north long distance ocean race).
