INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — Talks are underway between the Indian River County Sheriff's Office and the International Union of Police Associations over a new contract. At the center of the negotiations are a proposed 22% pay increase for deputies. Right now, deputies in the county start at a salary of just over $50,000 a year. The new proposal would raise that starting salary to $61,585.

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Seven months after it was torn apart by a tornado spawned during Hurricane Milton, the Vero Beach Veterans Inc. building has reopened its doors. The local veterans hall suffered major structural damage in October — holes in the roof, debris scattered across the floors, and a long road to recovery ahead. With no insurance and limited resources, hopes to reopen by Christmas were quickly replaced by a more realistic goal: Memorial Day.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — Detective Paul Taylor has spent 33 years in law enforcement but even now, he says the job still fuels his passion every day. “Law enforcement is in my blood. It’s everything,” Taylor said. Taylor, a veteran with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, is now being recognized for his work solving decades-old crimes. He’s been nominated for Detective of the Year at this year’s Law Enforcement Awards—a surprise he never expected. “It was definitely unexpected,” Taylor said.
