This is because the club has suffered increasing costs and less training time, only worsened by the University failing their development requirement to build a pool in the last seven years.

I first approached Bethan Jones, this season’s Blues women’s rugby captain, for an interview when I realised the women’s squad plays far more games in Michaelmas than the men’s Blues squad. The men play seven games over the eight week term, while the women play 14. This disparity in fixture densities wasn’t something I saw in the other sports I looked at, and in such a busy academic environment, didn’t seem fair.

1. Who is your sporting idol? Alan Shearer: I’m a massive Newcastle United fan. In a water polo context probably Denes Varga, he’s such a unique player and so fun to watch. It’s always dangerous seeing match highlights of him though because then you go into training thinking you can try some of the stuff he does, it very rarely goes well. 2. Best sporting moment? Winning Varsity against O*ford in 2023. They had won Prem South that year and came into the match incredibly confident.

Sport at Cambridge is often split into two: college sport and university sport. College sport is self-explanatory: it’s sport offered by colleges, often basics like rugby and netball.

Who is your sporting idol? My sporting idol would be Bryony Page, a trampolinist who won gold in Paris in her third Olympics at the age of 33. She showed that success in trampolining can happen at any age, and perseverance pays off. Best sporting moment? Competing at BUCS and making the top 8 final in a competitive group. I had been struggling with some mental blocks leading up to this competition, so I was very pleased to have been able to put a good routine out there on the day.
Is the Commonwealth Games worth it anymore?

It was announced this month that Glasgow will take over as the new hosts of the Commonwealth games for 2026, after Victoria in Australia pulled out over rising costs. This has raised many questions around the viability of the Commonwealth Games. It has taken over a year since Victoria announced they were scrapping the Games to find a replacement host. This is mostly due to the enormous cost of hosting a large sporting event.
A night at the Maracanã

Brazil is well known for its footballing prowess. Ronaldinho, Pele, Neymar, Marta, to name just a few of the footballing legends to come out of the country. But what is football in Brazil actually like? Well I had the opportunity to go to the world famous Maracanã Stadium and watch a game. The Maracanã has hosted two World Cups and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games.
