West Virginia-American Water Company has asked the Public Service Commission of West Virginia to approve a 2-part water service increase to its 172,000 customers in Putnam and 21 other counties. If approved, the proposed increase will become effective March 1, 2026. The water company proposes $46,376,033 in additional annual net water revenues over present rate revenues, or an overall increase in revenues of approximately 22.0 percent.

A large number of concerned citizens attended the meeting of the Putnam County Transportation Committee. The Putnam County Commission chambers in the Old Courthouse in Winfield can accommodate close to 250 attendees. More than half of the seats were filled at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 19th. The large gathering was prompted by a meeting of the Putnam County Transportation Committee. The committee regularly meets every other month to address maintenance issues relating to roads maintained by the WVDOT.

West Virginia American Water announced an infrastructure upgrade project in Buffalo on Tuesday, May 20th. The company will invest approximately $250,000 in infrastructure improvements on Railroad Avenue. The project, which began May 14th, includes replacement of 1,020 feet of aging water main with 2-inch PVC on Railroad Avenue. The project will improve service reliability for customers by reducing service disruptions and maintaining and improving water quality.

On May 9th, Justin Connor of Milton caught a 51.49-inch, 66.30-pound blue catfish on the Kanawha River in Putnam County using a mooneye on 80-pound test line. WVDNR fish culturist Ryan Bosserman, who works at the Apple Grove Fish Hatchery, confirmed Connor’s catch, which surpasses the previous 50.82-inch length record, set by Kimberly Feltner of Madison, Ind. in 2024. The blue catfish weight record remains with Michael John Drake, who caught a 69.45-pound, 50.51-inch fish on the Ohio River in 2023.

The team winning the 2025 Sustainability Award at the FRC World Championships. PARTs (Putnam Area Robotics Team) comprised of students from Winfield High, Hurricane High, Poca High, Buffalo High, and Teays Valley Christian School competed in FIRST Robotics Nationals in Houston, TX on April 16-19. FIRST is a robotics community where each year FIRST teams build and program a robot to perform the season’s challenge, and this year’s ocean-inspired challenge is REEFSCAPE.

More than one hundred 5K, 5K Ruck, and 10K runners bolt through the starting gate at Meeks Mountain Trails on Saturday, May 10th. The Cpl. Fulks Memorial Trail Race is an annual event on the winding Meeks Mountain Trails at Hurricane City Park. The race commemorates Marine Corps Cpl. William B. Fulks who died May 18, 2006 from wounds and burns suffered while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq. The race serves as a fundraiser for the William B.
