It’s no secret the music industry has been largely run by men since it started. However, there have been a handful of women who have taken different paths to leading individual record labels and putting their fingerprints on careers, genres, or opportunities. Some follow the “creative” path, starting as a singer or player. Others some from the business side, showing their acumen for commerce. For me, the list of people below cannot be put in any kind of ranked order, so I opted for alphabetical.

First formed in 2008, Shovels & Rope is a rock/folk/punk/Americana duo consisting of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst…who also happen to be married. I recently spoke with both Michael and Cary Ann, who were hanging out at their home in Charleston, South Carolina before hitting the road again (their current tour includes a stop at the Gothic Theatre on Fri., Dec. 13).

This weekend, Fleet Foxes, Thundercat, Andrew Bird, Lettuce, and more perform at the inaugural Outside Festival in Denver’s Civic Center Park. And while music takes center stage, the festival also features films, gear exhibits, speakers (including Shaun White and Diane Nyad), and more centered around outdoor recreation – a match that makes perfect sense in Colorado.
