    “When the Saints Go Marching In” has been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl. My father had a large jazz album collection that included Louis Armstrong tearing it up on this classic. Armstrong’s version transported me to New Orleans, making me feel as if I were marching with his band down Bourbon Street! There are as many versions of this song as there are musicians who have recorded it.

    Somerville rock and roller and part-time Vineyard Haven resident Tom Baker released a new CD last month called “Justine & Me” on Rum Bar Records. For those who don’t know, the “Justine” in the title is Justine Covault, Baker’s longtime partner, who started and ran the indie label Red on Red Records, which signed many artists (including Martha’s Vineyard resident Rose Guerin). Sadly, Covault passed away unexpectedly in her sleep in June 2023.

    The story of the year is not supposed to happen on the first day of the year. This year, maybe it has. While devastatingly cruel, if the early morning New Year’s Day murder and injury of several people is this year’s top story, it could bode well that nothing evilly comparable will happen during the rest of the year. It was shocking but should not be surprising.

    Tristan Israel is a unique singer/songwriter who has performed and recorded since the 1970s. He first arrived and worked summers on the island in the late sixties and has lived here for about 50 years. Brought up near New York City, Israel was exposed at an early age to musicals on Broadway, the Village Folk Scene, Jazz at the Vanguard, and Rock and Roll at the Brooklyn Fox.
