“When the Saints Go Marching In” has been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl. My father had a large jazz album collection that included Louis Armstrong tearing it up on this classic. Armstrong’s version transported me to New Orleans, making me feel as if I were marching with his band down Bourbon Street! There are as many versions of this song as there are musicians who have recorded it.

Somerville rock and roller and part-time Vineyard Haven resident Tom Baker released a new CD last month called “Justine & Me” on Rum Bar Records. For those who don’t know, the “Justine” in the title is Justine Covault, Baker’s longtime partner, who started and ran the indie label Red on Red Records, which signed many artists (including Martha’s Vineyard resident Rose Guerin). Sadly, Covault passed away unexpectedly in her sleep in June 2023.

The story of the year is not supposed to happen on the first day of the year. This year, maybe it has. While devastatingly cruel, if the early morning New Year’s Day murder and injury of several people is this year’s top story, it could bode well that nothing evilly comparable will happen during the rest of the year. It was shocking but should not be surprising.

Tristan Israel is a unique singer/songwriter who has performed and recorded since the 1970s. He first arrived and worked summers on the island in the late sixties and has lived here for about 50 years.
Brought up near New York City, Israel was exposed at an early age to musicals on Broadway, the Village Folk Scene, Jazz at the Vanguard, and Rock and Roll at the Brooklyn Fox.

The Barn Raisers Ball, an annual off-season community event, celebrated its 30th anniversary last Saturday night, with folks bringing a dessert to share, placing a donation to the M.V. Agricultural Society in a large glass jar in the lobby, and dancing and listening to some live music by one of the Island’s hottest bands, Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. For many people (including me), the live music is the draw.

One of my favorite rhythm guitar approaches is the one that the late jazz master Freddie Green pioneered in his work with the Count Basie Orchestra. Throughout his 50 years on the gig, Green played an acoustic archtop, unamplified. Though his strumming was sometimes more felt than heard, it contributed so much to Basie’s signature sound and swing. Green’s style—quarter-note strums in 4/4 time (aka “four to the floor”)—seems simple enough. But it’s rarely mastered.

The blues is of central importance to American music. Without the earthy style that emerged around the 1860s, you wouldn’t have jazz, rock ’n’ roll, hip-hop, and so many styles and variations. Jazz and the blues go hand in hand; traditional blues guitarists enrich their playing with jazz vocabulary, while jazz guitarists use the feel and simplicity of the blues to add emotion and grit to their playing.

Boxing 1 Hour Ago Teofimo Lopez makes the first defence of his WBO junior welterweight title when he faces Jamaine Ortiz at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas on Thursday night. Lopez (19-1; 13 KOs) won the IBF lightweight title in 2019 when he stopped Richard Commey in two rounds and then upset the talented Vasyl Lonachenko to win the WBA Super and WBO titles.
