Shadow drafting is an exercise you can participate in as a spectator at a fantasy auction. The goal is to assemble your own team from the players you would have been willing to bid $1 more than their actual cost. In other words, if Jacob deGrom is drafted for $20, you would roster him if you were willing to go to $21. (But don’t. Okay, maybe.)There are two ways to shadow-draft. The easy method is to take final draft results and cherry-pick those players you'd want for $1 more.

Bill James challenged common wisdom and turned us into more intelligent baseball fans with his Baseball Abstract series back in the 1980s. I could have recommended any one of the many books he wrote, but this book is a terrific summary of his impact on the game as retold by “colleagues, critics, competitors, and fans.” Who better to describe how important he was to the game than those who were most affected by him? I consider this a great entry point to digging into his terrific work.
