Tomato plants were grown and cultivated in a greenhouse with a photoperiod of 16 hours light and 8 hours dark, and a minimum temperature of 16°C. Only healthy four- to seven-week-old plants were used in all experiments. The youngest leaves (the most apical) were used to isolate somatic nuclei. Meiocytes were isolated from young flower buds containing anthers that were less than 2 mm in size.
