Aldi has claimed a fourth consecutive win in our latest ‘Super’ Grocer 33 pricing survey, which pitches the two leading discounters against the traditional supermarket giants. The victory gives Aldi a clean sweep in its head to head with arch-rival Lidl for the current Grocer 33 year. In a basket dominated by basic own-label goods (plus 10 branded items), Aldi’s £59.44 total was 56p cheaper than the equivalent products in Lidl’s basket.

A quiet morning in terms of major grocery news which may come as a relief to many in the industry given the drama of recent weeks. The was plenty of coverage of British American Tobacco’s latest results announcement. The FT focussed on the tobacco giant’s expected return to profit in the US for the first time in three years. This it suggested would be in mid-2025 and based on strong demand for nicotine pouches.

Tesco picked up a first pricing win since mid-March in The Grocer’s annual price comparison competition, joining Sainsbury’s in second place with a ninth victory in the current Grocer 33 year competition. Both remain well behind leader Asda overall but this week Tesco undercut its Leeds-based rival by 19p. Key to its success was a hefty discount of £7.59 for its Clubcard members, which reduced Tesco’s total to £67.36.

Asda picked up a hat-trick of victories to take its total of Grocer 33 pricing wins to 20 at the business end of the annual competition. At £70.67, Asda’s total was £3.30 cheaper than runner-up Sainsbury’s. This was 4.5% cheaper than Sainsbury’s. It meant it almost hit executive chairman Allan Leighton’s target of undercutting its main supermarket rivals by 5% to 10% – but not quite.

While much of the media attention this morning, including The Grocer’s, is focussing on the impact of the recent cyberattack at M&S, there was also a lot of concern regarding the news of inflation starting to saor again. Today’s figures from the Office for National Statisitcs said UK inflaton hit 3.5% during “awful April”. As reported in The Times this was up from 2.6% in the previous month and reached its highest level since January 2024.
