Morrisons slashed the cost of carrots, swedes and parsnips to just 8p as part of an Easter price offensive this week. But it was cheapest in our special Easter-themed Grocer 33 shopping basket – recording its first Grocer 33 win since January – without these lines even being included. Instead a superb deal on the half leg of lamb proved crucial. The Bradford retailer’s £81.15 trolley was £2.78 cheaper than nearest rival Asda’s.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Co-op Wholesale, or for many grocery observers the artist formerly known as Nisa. It was given its new moniker at the end of March while at the same time Katie Secretan was promoted to MD, a role that had been vacated by Peter Batt just before Christmas. The changes were confirmed just days after it emerged Nisa was no longer in negotiations with Bestway to continue supplying its symbol group Costcutter next year.

YouTube sensations the Sidemen have launched their ice cream range into national foodservice giant Brakes. The Sidemen, who have more than 22 million followers on the video streaming platform, have developed the ice cream range with manufacturer Beechdean, with the products manufactured at Beechdean’s facility in Cheshire.

Asda claimed a third Grocer 33 pricing win in the last four weeks, but it was still not yet hitting executive chairman Allan Leighton’s ambition to go 5%-10% cheaper than its main supermarket rivals. At £74.03 the Leeds-based retailer was £2.68 cheaper than last week’s winner Sainsbury’s.

The Co-op is investing £800,000 in lower prices of key own-brand lines for its wholesale customers. The move is the first major strategic development since the society rebranded its Nisa business as Co-op Wholesale last month. Co-op said it was also doubling the number of own-brand lines that it included as part of its key range, which features lower prices for its wholesale customers.
