Wednesday will feel a lot more like summer rather than spring. Many high temperatures will reach the 90s and 80s. A cold front will start to move in from the northwest late in the day. Winds will be breezy as it continues to approach. Showers and storms will be nearby to the north and northwest during the evening. Northwest Kansas and Southwest Nebraska will be on the tail end of this activity. The northwest corner of the area will also be on the tail end of a severe storm risk.

High pressure has not budged so Tuesday’s conditions will be similar to how we started the week. There is an approaching cold front that will soon bring stronger winds and a small chance for rain. After a mild morning we will warm back up into the 80s. A few 90s sneak into the area from the southwest. Before the cold front starts to move in there will be a small chance for a shower or storm to the northwest tonight. This chance is looking unlikely and most of us will stay dry.

We are picking up things right where we left off over the weekend. High pressure will keep us dry and sunny. Warmth will continue to start the new week too. High temperatures in the 80s will be widespread. Fire danger will be high today mainly to the north and in Nebraska. Furnas County in Southwest Nebraska will be under a Fire Weather Warning from 11am to 9pm. We will begin to see some highs in the 90s tomorrow in Western Kansas.

High pressure has built into the region and this will result in a dry and quiet start to the weekend. The Drought Monitor is through this past Tuesday, May 6, and then was released on Thursday, May 8, so it does not have Wednesday’s rain update. Therefore, we should see some improvements with next week’s update. After a cool start this morning we will warm up into the 70s. One or two spots farther north could reach the low 80s.

Sixth graders at Robinson Middle School in Wichita filled the bleachers of their gymnasium Wednesday to get a lesson on weather from KSN Storm Track 3 Meteorologist Ronelle Williams. Different types of severe weather and safety information were big topics. Students even took a virtual tour of the KSN Studio. Wednesday was a damp day but the heaviest rain subsided long enough for students to get outside for a quick look at Storm Tracker 3.
