On March 28, Beirut’s southern Dahiya suburb was targeted with four Israeli airstrikes on the neighborhood of Hadath — the first attack on Beirut since the truce in November 2024. A residential building, which housed a number of Lebanese families, was left completely flattened by the airstrikes. “The entire building is gone. The only thing left is cement and glass,” a local business owner told Mondoweiss.

The sound of gunfire marked the funeral procession in Arabsalim, a small southern Lebanese town. A Hizballah fighter – killed by the Israeli military – was being laid to rest. Only a small part of the martyr’s body had been found. It was wrapped in cotton and prepared for burial on 20 January. Posters bearing the photographs of numerous martyrs can be seen on lamp posts and in people’s homes across Arabsalim. The posters are displayed alongside the flags of Hizballah and its ally, the Amal movement.

Israeli drones still hum across Dahiyeh, taunting residents of this Beirut suburb. Enveloped in the ruins of war, the people of Dahiyeh have grown accustomed to the dry whirr of constant surveillance. The atmosphere since the ceasefire agreement of 27 November has been one of hyper-vigilance, especially as Israel has repeatedly violated the truce. “This ceasefire won’t hold,” an older resident of Burj al-Barajneh – a Palestinian refugee camp in the Dahiyeh area – tells me.
