February is American Heart Month, and the road toward a healthy cardiovascular system late in life begins early in adulthood. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women across most ethnic and racial groups. In 2022, it accounted for 1 in 5 of all U.S. deaths. Heart disease is also the top reason for death in Indiana, where in 2022 more than 15,000 people died from the disorder.
