Muslim leaders say Islamophobia has become normalised in Australia, describing recent vandalism targeted at predominantly Muslim communities in Western Sydney as unsurprising. Images published by The Guardian show the words "F**K ISLAM" and "CANCEL ISLAM" scrawled on a railway underpass in Chester Hill,. The graffiti was later covered by white paint.

In Penrith and the lower Blue Mountains, every second person has a story about the mythical panther: a fleeting glimpse of a large creature, a suspicious paw print, an animal carcass in a tree, or simply a sense of being watched. Ridiculed by sceptics, locals have long shared stories among themselves and rumours persist of an elusive beast surviving in the wilderness. "I find when you mention the panther, you've got two camps," Bilpin artist Regina Walter says.

Legendary broadcaster Clive Robertson, who gained popularity for his original style and going off script, has died aged 78. Robertson, who had been diagnosed with cancer, was remembered on Thursday by colleagues as a "one-off". He began his ABC career in 1967 before taking over Sydney's Breakfast program on what was then 2BL in 1972.

New South Wales landlords could be required to modify properties to ensure tenants do not suffer extreme indoor temperatures, if a comprehensive suite of recommendations to reduce heatwave harm are realised. The Greater Sydney Heat Taskforce, formed by a group of Western Sydney councils and Resilient Sydney, has made 40 recommendations to help businesses and residents "survive and thrive during extreme heat events".

The opening of the Parramatta light rail has been pushed back to next year after an electrical wire fell onto a tram and revealed equipment defects across the network. Trams have become a familiar sight in Parramatta, Camelia and Cumberland since testing of the line connecting Westmead and Carlingford began in December last year.
