Figures from Tesco Bank show that households are sticking to their savings goals where possible, with almost half (47%) contributing monthly to their savings pots, while 20% of savers top up when they can.

Budget shopping chain Poundland is closing 68 stores and two warehouses as it attempts to improve its fortunes. The chain, which was itself sold for a pound to a US investment firm called Gordon Brothers last week, said there was “much work to do” to get the company back on track.

Co-op members are being offered a £10 sweetener after a cyber attack left their data exposed and supermarket shelves empty. Members who shop between 18 and 25 June and spend over £40 will receive £10 off their shopping – an offer that can also be used by new members. Each member can only use the offer once, and Co-op membership costs £1. Data hackedDuring the May attack, hackers stole members’ past and present data.

Inflation held steady at 3.4% in May, making a cut to interest rates this week less likely. Figures from Government data provider the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show prices were rising at 3.4% last month. While that’s slightly lower than the 3.5% announced for April, this was incorrectly raised by an error in car tax data, and the correct figure would also have been 3.4%.

Tesco has announced that it will price match even more Aldi products, as pressure from discount supermarkets continues to bite. Ashwin Prasad, the chief commercial officer, said the company has chosen more than 80 additional products to price match, including own-brand houmous and baby plum tomatoes. The cost of Tesco houmous fell to 99p, iceberg lettuce to 64p, baby tomatoes to 78p and onions to 35p as the price match took effect.
