    A ghost broker has been sentenced to 12-months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months with a requirement to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, after selling two fraudulent motor insurance policies to unsuspecting members of the public. Saami Salami, 54, of Sunnymead Road, Brent, then used their details to attempt to file fraudulent claims against them. On 27 January 2025 he pleaded guilty at the Royal Courts of Justice to two counts of fraud by false representation.

    Markel has appointed Mike Petchey head of schemes to lead its broker-led specialist proposition. According to the insurer, he will focus on enhancing its approach to schemes through “collaborative and sector-specific propositions”, aiming to deliver value to brokers and their clients. In the newly create role, Petchey, pictured, will report to Jo Sykes, broker director UK at Markel.

    The Association of British Insurers has appointed Chris Bose as director of general insurance and international, joining from Nationwide Building Society. Bose will come on board at the ABI on 11 August after 10 years at Nationwide. During his time with the building society he led the policy and public affairs function, and also served as interim director of corporate affairs.

    Patons Insurance reached £31.5m of gross written premiums in the 2024/25 financial year, growing by 16.6% compared to the year before. The broker claimed the sustained period of growth followed its rebranding exercise in 2023 and investments in compliance, IT and finance functions. In October 2023 Patons targeted £35m GWP in the following three years. With seven locations across the UK, the broker specialises in taxi and fleet customers, according to its website.
