State Sen. John Horhn defeated incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba in Tuesday’s Democratic primary runoff. Lumumba had been seeking a third term, but he was unable to rally supporters to win the runoff election. Horhn will now go on to the June 3 general election, where he will face the winner of the Republican primary runoff and independent candidates. Horhn has served District 26, representing parts of Hinds and Madison counties, for 32 years.

On Saturday morning, Incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba attended a community outreach day at Lynch Street. Senator John Horhn also attended a fitness boot camp at Battlefield Park. "We feel good," said Mayor Lumumba.

Crowds gathered for the annual South Jackson parade and festival. On Saturday, bands from Jackson high schools and middle schools paraded down McDowell Road. With the municipal election season in full swing, the festival attracted candidates who are looking for votes including incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba. Mayor Lumumba is battling state Sen. John Horhn to win the Democratic Party primary April 22.
