Closing arguments are expected Thursday in the trial of a former Jackson firefighter charged with statutory rape. Audric Simmons is accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 2020 at a Byram residence. Simmons, a 37-year-old Air Force veteran, denied the accusations during the 16 minutes he was on the witness stand Wednesday. The prosecution chose not to cross-examine the defendant. The trial is scheduled to resume at 1 p.m. with closing arguments followed by jury deliberations.

A former Jackson firefighter confessed to having sex with a 13-year-old girl after his arrest, according to testimony on Wednesday. Audric Simmons, who is charged with statutory rape, was arrested in 2020 in Byram. Rankin County Deputy Joshua Ellis, who was a field training officer for Byram in May 2020, was the first witness called Wednesday. Ellis testified he placed Simmons in his police cruiser and read him his Miranda rights, and he waived his right to remain silent.

Residents of Yazoo City are picking up the pieces after weekend flash flooding left extensive damage to homes and property. Magnolia Thomas' home on Short Jackson Street was surrounded by water on Saturday, trapping her inside for hours, and destroying everything. "I have four TVs, all that. And the bed. The floor is popping up. I've been mopping and I got the majority of the water, but the floor is popping up and so there ain't nothing I can save," Thomas said.
