Much of the literature on multistate processes is motivated by follow-up studies where individuals may experience one or more outcomes (or failures), frequently of various types, during a defined study period. Such studies may occur for example, in biomedical or industrial settings. This is the context for much of the modeling and analysis methodology described in a valuable new book by Andersen and Ravn.
