The former Texas land commissioner looked askance at the stemless wineglass filled with iced tea. “Do you have a larger glass?” Jerry Patterson asked our waiter at a suspiciously modern Tex-Mex place. “Iced tea usually comes in a larger glass.”“We don’t have a larger glass, but I could keep refilling this one,” said the waiter, who seemed ambivalent about the generosity that the gigantic, translucent tumblers common in Tex-Mex restaurants represent.

There are approximately 42 Emilys who work at Texas Monthly. People get exasperated around here when you say just “Emily.” Which one? For the sake of clarity, the Emilys tend to be referred to by their last names. I mentioned one in last month’s letter: McCullar, senior writer. And I’m mentioning another this month: Kimbro, creative director and the force behind our cover designs. I stared at the image on our March cover for a long, long time.

Welcome to Indie Bookstore Week, Texas Monthly’s salute to the bookshops that have shaped the lives of our readers and writers. Used books are a great deal, and not just because they’re cheaper than new books. There’s a lot more to their value than what’s accounted for in the price penciled onto the right-hand corner of that blank page before the title page. They come with bonus material: the scribbles, the underlining, the grocery list bookmarks, the forgotten old photos tucked between pages.
