By most accounts, the pre-draft visit between Shedeur Sanders and the Pittsburgh Steelers went swimmingly last week. Sanders described the meeting as “a 10” (out of 10) and Todd McShay later reported that Mike Tomlin really likes him after the roughly five-hour meeting that took place. Fast forward to yesterday and KPRC’s Aaron Wilson reported that the visit didn’t go well and that the Steelers would not be selecting Sanders as a result.

As the Aaron Rodgers saga with the Pittsburgh Steelers is now in its second month, he has finally broke his silence with a lengthy interview on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show this afternoon. There have been many theories about what could be causing the hold up, and among those is the size of his contract. Mike Florio made what he called a “semi-educated guess” on the terms of a potential Rodgers contract back in early March and tossed around a two-year $90 million contract.

It’s difficult to parse the large influx of reports and information that comes in this time of year right before the NFL Draft. While Todd McShay reported that Mike Tomlin really likes Shedeur Sanders following his recent visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers, KPRC’s Aaron Wilson reported quite the opposite yesterday. He said the visit “didn’t go well” and said pretty definitively that he wouldn’t end up being a Steeler.

The assumption for most of the offseason has been that Shedeur Sanders will go at some point over the first 10 picks of the 2025 NFL Draft. He wasn’t really looked at as a possibility for the Pittsburgh Steelers until he came in for a pre-draft visit late in the process. Suddenly it doesn’t seem all that unrealistic that he could fall to the Steelers at No. 21 overall.

I don’t care who the pick is or how certain scouts are on their evaluations — there is no such thing as a can’t-miss NFL prospect. Players can fail for any number of reasons, and not all of those are linked exclusively to their play. Especially for quarterbacks, intangible traits like leadership, confidence and poise can make or break their ability to succeed at the hardest position in all of sports. All that said, Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders is certainly not lacking confidence.

The New York Giants might hold the keys to how the 2025 NFL Draft’s first round unfolds. Over the last week or two there has been a lot of chatter about them passing on a quarterback at No. 3 overall and selecting either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. If they do, then the QBs could start to slide further down the board than expected. GM Joe Schoen spoke to the media today and he was asked about the possibility of adding to the quarterback room at some point.

Looking at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ actions throughout the pre-draft process, there is a wide array of players and even positions that could feasibly be taken on Day 1. It’s impossible to ignore that they they’ve shown interest in first-round quarterbacks, and that has dominated the conversation surrounding the Steelers for the last week. If you ask Pittsburgh-Post Gazette insider Ray Fittipaldo, there still isn’t a great chance that quarterback ends up being the team’s pick in Round 1.
