    ABSTRACTThis article examines how effigies were used in Britain after the signing of the Armistice in November 1918. Effigies of Kaiser Wilhelm, the Crown Prince and members of the German High Command were paraded through the streets of villages, towns and cities as part of celebrations for the cessation of hostilities. These figures were physically and verbally abused, hanged on gibbets, displayed from shop windows, placed on trial and ‘executed’ by hanging and public burning.

    On 4 September 2024, the Grenfell Inquiry published its Phase 2 report. The salient findings can be broadly condensed into (1) issues of systematic dishonesty, (2) deliberate and sustained strategies to manipulate testing processes, (3) conflicts of interest affecting those who were guardians of the public interest, (4) prolonged knowledge of risks but a failure to act and (5) a persistent indifference to fire safety.
