The thing about living in an old property with great (if worn-out) bones is deciding when and how to give it a new lease on life. For one writer-photographer couple in San Francisco, the tipping point was the near death of their kitchen, which, as interior designer Christine Lin puts it, was, “shall we say, nonresponsive.” The Shingle-style house dates to 1906 and the couple, empty nesters with adult children, have lived in one of its three flats for years.

Limerick Lane transforms into a dual-purpose structure, serving as both a residence and tasting room for the adjoined winery. Matthew David Bowles of TenBooks, Erik Kramer of Social Studio and Jill Shadek collaborate to bring their collective vision to life, integrating the philosophes of the vineyard into the design approach. Originally, a charming, shingle-clad bungalow stood in place of the current Limerick Lane residence.

In maintaining an open connection to the surrounding landscape, Tranquil Terraced Piedmont remains respectfully grounded to its midcentury origins. Originally designed and built in the late 1940s – with additional works completed in 1960 – Tranquil Terraced Piedmont remained unchanged until its most recent renovation. When the current owners – a couple with young children – first saw the home, it was in a state of deep disrepair.
