Les scientifiques et l’équipage à bord du vaisseau de recherche de l’Institut océanique Schmidt, le Falkor (too), avaient pour mission de prendre le véhicule télécommandé du bateau jusqu’au bassin de Powell, une plaine abyssale à 2 987 mètres de profondeur.
