After the month of April last year, Aaron Judge was hitting .207, Chris Sale ranked 49th among qualified starters in ERA, Luis Gil had an ERA over 4.00, and Paul Skenes had not even made his MLB debut. As we know now, Judge would go on to produce one of the greatest seasons ever by a right-handed hitter ever to earn MVP honors, Sale would win the National League Cy Young Award, and Gil and Skenes would each be named the Rookie of the Year in their respective leagues.

On April 11, five players held a share of Major League Baseball’s home run lead. Unsurprisingly, Aaron Judge, Mike Trout and Kyle Schwarber were among them. More surprisingly, so was 23-year-old A’s slugger Tyler Soderstrom, a 6-foot-2-inch former top prospect whose ability to barrel a baseball was yielding the best results of his brief career.
