The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors met Tuesday and approved a three percent merit-based pay increase for staff and faculty, beginning in July. Graduate students will also see an increase to their living stipends next year. Leslie Orellana, a first-generation student about to graduate and the undergraduate representative to the board, told fellow board members her parents worked blue collar jobs after they immigrated to the United States.

The Trump administration appears to have backtracked on an earlier decision to close more than 30 offices that enforce mine safety. Earlier this year, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) listed field offices across the country with the Mine Safety and Health Administration, or MSHA, among government buildings that would have their leases terminated. A spokesperson with the Department of Labor confirmed, 34 of these field offices will remain open.

The Radford Army Ammunition Plant is pushing back its completion date for a new incinerator that had been scheduled to be in operation by July. The Arsenal, as it’s commonly called, now expects to complete construction of the new facility by next June. The Radford Arsenal first announced plans to build a new energetic waste incinerator in 2018. Justine Barati is director of public affairs for the Army’s Joint Munitions Command, which oversees the Arsenal.

Pulaski residents who played a role in the Civil Rights movement over 70 years ago are being honored at an event Saturday at New River Community College in Dublin, hosted by the Calfee Community & Cultural Center. In 1947, 24 families from the Black community in Pulaski filed a landmark civil rights case. They wanted the Pulaski school board to offer equal education for all children, regardless of their race.

At least 183 federal research grants have been terminated or issued stop work orders across four Virginia Universities under the Trump administration. Funding for these grants represents more than $232 million. This number is about $60 million higher than what Radio IQ reported last week, after George Mason University released new information. That university says they are appealing the termination of eight federal grants.
