The story of Betelgeuse and the Deetz family is so foreign to the usual Filipinos, including me. I had never heard of Beetlejuice until I looked for recommended horror films on Google. Upon watching, however, a Filipino viewer would find commonalities and comfort in the American-centric story: afterlife, ghosts, slapstick performances, and lipsync performances from the cast members. Director Tim Burton exemplifies his mastery in executing the universal appeal of his films.

Ang daming malutong sa Balota: ang unang linya ni Marian Rivera sa pelikula, ang mga lumang P500 na inihahanda para pang-vote buying, at pati na rin ang commentary ni Kip Oebanda tungkol sa kultura ng eleksyon sa ating bansa. Siguro'y personal best ito ni Kip bilang director at ni Marian bilang film actress. Kumpara sa mga nauna niyang dinirect, mas confident ang direction ni Kip dito.

Nakasama niya ang simpleng magsasakang si Pilo (Perry Dizon) na nasangkot sa kumplikado at nakakagulat na pagdiskobre sa underground marijuana industry sa Benguet.

Panahon na para magkaroon tayo ng pelikula na genuinely nagpapakita at tumatalakay sa tamis at pait ng pagkakaroon ng kapamilyang nasa autism spectrum. Nakakapagod nang i-explain na ang pagiging autistic ay hindi lang parang yung sterotypical role ni Gerald Anderson na lagi nang ginamit bilang pang-offend sa ibang tao (ayoko banggitin yung pangalan kasi naging equivalent na ito sa pagiging kakaiba) o yung pagiging "quirky" tulad nina Sheldon Cooper sa The Big Bang Theory.

It ticks all the boxes of a good, escapist American blockbuster film while continuing the excitement and the intelligence of the beloved cinematic tale. Caesar is gone but his influence is present and highly felt.
