More than $100,000 has been raised to help fund the establishment of a new outdoor recreation and industry group focused on the needs of hunters and recreational shooters in Western Australia. The as-yet unnamed group is being formed by former WA upper house MP Louise Kingston, Shooters Union WA state advocate Steve Harrison, well-known WA-based shooting YouTuber Mark Else (from Mark and Sam After Work) and administrator Nick Tonkin, all of whom are acting in their capacities as individuals.

The upcoming review of Western Australia’s deeply flawed new gun laws “is not just warranted, it’s essential,” the CEO of the Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA), James Walsh, says. “These laws have created chaos without delivering meaningful improvements to public safety,” he said.

Western Australia Shadow Attorney-General Nick Goiran has secured a win for shooters in the fight against the state’s rushed and hateful gun laws, with his motion to refer them to the Standing Committee on Legislation for a full review and report succeeding on Wednesday night. The Nationals also supported the motion, as did Legalise Cannabis, One Nation and the Australian Christians. Astoundingly, the motion was also supported by the Greens and the Animal Justice Party.

A “game-changing” meeting of national firearms representative groups took place in Canberra last week, convened by the Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA). The 14 May meeting welcomed representatives from the SSAA, Shooters Union, Field & Game Australia, IPSC Australia, Sporting Clays Australia and the National Rifle Association of Australia.
