As the newly-elected MP for the rural South Cotswolds, I’m reaching out to West England Bylines readers about the climate and nature bill I’m introducing to parliament. This legislation is vital for our region’s future, addressing both environmental challenges and the needs of our rural communities. My path to this point has been unconventional. For two decades, I’ve been an environmental advocate, best known for my solo ocean rowing expeditions across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans.

Recently we requested opinion pieces from election candidates. Last week we published 2 contributions from election candidates in the North Cotswolds on the problems faced by their area. Now, on election day we are following this up with the South Cotswolds candidates who responded to our invitation. Many of the same concerning themes are in evidence. NB West England Bylines takes a keen interest in the election but is not advocating voting for any any one party.

I have spent thousands of hours on the River Thames. I learned to row in Oxford, where the Thames is known as the Isis. I rowed at Thames Rowing Club on the Thames Tideway. I have lived in various places along the Thames, gradually heading west – Fulham, Putney, Kew, Richmond, Windsor, and now close to its source in Gloucestershire.
