It’s Bird! It’s a Plane! No, it’s Grandma Roz arriving on American Airlines flight 2661. I live in the Philadelphia suburbs. My son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren live in California. Although Tom and Amy were born and raised here on the east coast, after graduating from college they ran a successful start-up together and worked from home. So they could choose to live anywhere. At the time, they were living in Baltimore. They chose to move to California. You can’t argue with that choice.

Although I’m a reader at heart, from time to time I’ll fall in love with a TV show. Dr. Who. Good Omens. The Adventures of Merlin. Even though all of these shows have inspired scads of fanfic, I’d never read a word of it. My mistake. So What is Fanfic? “I just got off the miracle flight from Ft Lauderdale to Detroit,” a friend just posted on Facebook. “Fourteen people in wheelchairs boarded in Florida, then got up and walked off the plane in Detroit. It’s a Miracle!!”He was calling out able-bodied people who take advantage of the rules that allow folks with disabilities to take a wheelchair to the gate and board the plane first. Accommodating people who need extra time and extra help to board the plane is a good thing.

THE DEPARTMENT OF REDUNDANCY DEPARTMENTEdna St. Vincent Millay once observed that life isn’t one damn thing after another — it’s “one damn thing over and over.”Some writers (not Edna!) apparently apply this principle to writing. They seem to believe that if something is worth saying, it’s worth saying many times, often in the same paragraph. They’re wrong. I’m a writing coach and editor-for-hire. For decades, I’ve helped writers to improve and publish their prose.
