Texas just added 28,100 jobs in May, setting a new record high for total job count, again. That marks six straight months of record-breaking employment growth, and our state isn’t slowing down. The total number of nonfarm jobs now sits at 14.34 million, with more than 213,000 jobs added over the past six months, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. Our growth rate of 1.5% still beats the national average. While Abilene didn’t top the Texas charts, it’s far from the bottom.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores just dropped, and it turns out our Texas third graders are finally hitting their stride in literacy. These laws were drawn from Spanish, Mexican, and English common law back when Texas was still its own Republic. And here’s the wild part: even though the law has roots going back nearly two centuries, it seems like it gets adjusted every election cycle. That’s part of why I pay attention to it.
