Singer/songwriter Jax Hollow released her most recent album, Come Up Kid, on Friday the 13th. She didn’t pay too much attention to the superstition associated with the day. She just thought it was the right time to release the record. Across 11 songs, she used her music to tell a story, covering a wide range of emotions and experiences fusing blues, Americana and rock.

Miles Davis’ record Kind of Blue is not only considered one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, but one of the greatest albums of all time. The album has consistently ranked in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list, and it was chosen by the Library of Congress for the inaugural National Recording Registry. The album celebrated its 65th anniversary last year.

Art Makers Outpost’s concert series returns on Saturday, Jan. 25 with musical acts close to the Evanston community: Jeanie B with her band Angel Paint, and Christina Trulio with violinist Emily Randle. Jeanie B and Trulio are longtime friends and are excited to perform on the same bill. As a musician who lived in Evanston for more than 20 years, Trulio said Saturday’s concert will be a big reunion. “All of us have worked together. It’s a very small world and small community,” she said.

Jonas Friddle will be celebrating the release of his latest album, When the Water Was the Sky, in front of a sold out crowd at SPACE on Saturday night, Jan. 18. In an interview with the RoundTable, he revealed that the project was a long time coming, with some songs being 10 years old. With this project being more personal to him, he said he wanted to take his time with the songwriting and recording.

With a rich history of producing music across genres, Chicago artist Senite has not only found inspiration from other local acts but developed relationships with them over the years and sometimes even performed alongside them. She credits Jamila Woods, Noname, Ravyn Lenae, Saba, Pivot Gang and Chance the Rapper with influencing her work. Meeting Jamila Woods in the Chicagoland poetry scene, Senite learned more about how poetry and rap can be intertwined, something that rapper Noname is known for.

Texas-based blues artist Ally Venable considers the blues her best friend. It’s actually the name of a song from her 2023 album Real Gone. The chorus’ lyrics are contradictory in nature, where she says that while the blues are her best friend, they’re also her worst enemy. Talking to the RoundTable ahead of her performance at Evanston SPACE on Tuesday, Venable said the contradictory lyrics are meant to showcase the double-sided emotions of blues music.

On the opening song of her holiday album, Ana Gasteyer declares the best part of the holidays is sugar and booze, which incidentally is also the title of the album. It’s hard to argue against, as the album as a whole is a treat to listen to and best accompanied by your drink of choice. Released in 2019, it instantly makes the holidays feel that much brighter, with a lively big band sound reminiscent of Christmas albums of the past.
