The staff member, aged in her 50s, was attacked at Royal Oldham Hospital [Geograph/David Dixon]A member of staff, believed to be a nurse, has been seriously injured in a stabbing at a hospital. The woman, aged in her 50s, was left with life-changing injuries in the attack at Royal Oldham Hospital at about 23:30 GMT on Saturday. It is believed a member of the public attacked her with a sharp instrument which was not a knife, Greater Manchester Police said. She remains in hospital for treatment.

Tributes have been paid to a "visionary" charity founder who began campaigning against violent crime after her child was shot dead. Patsy McKie, one of the founders of the Mothers Against Violence (MAV) group, has died at the age of 77. She helped set up the organisation after her son Dorrie was killed in Manchester in 1999. Their work against gun and knife crime led to her being awarded a special recognition in the Pride of Manchester Awards in 2019.

Police are continuing to offer a £50,000 reward to identify the killer who sexually assaulted and strangled a girl as she walked back from a party 40 years ago. The body of 14-year-old Lisa Hession was discovered in an alley just 200 yards (183m) away from her home before midnight on 8 December 1984 in Leigh, Greater Manchester. Her mother Christine, who died in 2016, had reported Lisa missing at about 22:45 GMT when she had not returned home at her expected time of 22:30 GMT.

Rugby star Kevin Sinfield has raised more than £1m after reaching the end of his 230-mile (379 km) run for people affected by motor neurone disease (MND). He started the week-long endeavour in Liverpool last Sunday, in memory of his late friend and teammate Rob Burrow, who died with the illness in June.

Rugby star Kevin Sinfield has started a fifth epic fundraiser in memory of his late teammate Rob Burrow, who died of motor neurone disease (MND) this year. The 44-year-old will be running more than 230 miles (370km) in seven days across the UK, having already raised about £10m over four previous annual challenges. For this year’s event, he started at Liverpool’s annual Santa Dash, where more than 8,000 participants ran along the city’s famous waterfront with him.
