Monday night, the Dallas Wings, who currently play their home games in Arlington, Texas, controlled the first selection in the WNBA’s annual draft of college and international players. They chose UConn star Paige Bueckers. Amazingly, Bueckers, the top pick of the best women’s basketball league in the world, also reportedly signed a contract with an entirely different hoops league the week prior.

It’s a pretty good time for women’s sports right now. We shouldn’t take it for granted – not yet. This past week, I spent some time around the Dallas Trinity FC women’s soccer club. The context had to do with a docuseries I directed called “Raising Her Game” (now streaming on Victory+) that traces the concurrent evolution of U.S. soccer and women’s sports through the lens of the University of Texas women’s soccer program.

Remember the 1990s? The Dallas Stars hockey club moved from Minnesota to play in Reunion Arena. Of course, that was also the decade when a massive robot rebellion rent society asunder. OK, you might remember the former better than the latter. That’s because the robot revolt luckily only happened in a movie. This is a sports column about a film. And more. I attended a cinema screening of “The Electric State” on Wednesday, prior to the motion picture’s Friday debut on Netflix.

For TCU Women’s Basketball Head Coach Mark Campbell, last season probably felt like the early days of women’s intercollegiate basketball. “We didn’t have enough healthy bodies. It’s been two weeks since many Dallas Mavs fans’ worlds came crashing down. How ya doing? I went to watch the SMU men’s basketball team play Pitt on Tuesday. Mavericks’ GM Nico Harrison had come to scout the game. A friend watching from home had alerted me to his presence because the ACC Network broadcast had cut away to him at one point. Not too long after that, I heard a lone “Fire Nico” emerge from someone in the crowd who also realized he was there.
