The last part of England to convert to Christianity back in the late 7th century, Sussex still maintains a spirit of defiant individuality. In Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, smartly kept streets lined with elegant boutiques and tea houses conceal a legacy of rebellion and pagan rituals, some of which survive to this day. The town’s 5 November bonfire festivities are the biggest and oldest (dating from 1795) in the country, as well as possibly the most raucous.
