Eureka High and Lafayette High put aside their Rockwood rivalry this spring to field co-op boys and girls teams in water polo, and both ended their seasons in the Missouri district playoffs. The Lafayette/Eureka boys won four of their last five matches in the regular season and carried that over to an 11-4 second-round district victory over Parkway South on May 13. A strong first half powered by nine goals, five of them in the second period, put the Lancer-Wildcats in control.

There was no better way for Kenny Seibert to put his new bachelor’s degree in sports management and coaching to use than to hitch a ride with the Liberty University women’s softball team as it competes for a College World Series championship. A 2021 Herculaneum High graduate, Seibert is in his second year as a student manager for the Flames, who were in Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Super Regionals May 23-24.

Catherine Wakeland graduated from Grandview last week. But before she heads to Joplin to attend Missouri Southern State University and continue her career in track and field, she got to compete on her home track one more time. The Eagles hosted the Class 2 Sectional 1 meet May 17, with the top four finishers in each of the 19 events qualifying for the state championships at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City on Friday and Saturday.

Of the eight sectional singles matches at the Class 1 state tennis championships, only two went to a third-set tiebreaker. Crystal City junior Nate DeClue was in one of them against Mexico’s Boston Davolt. After splitting the first two sets, Davolt beat DeClue 10-7 in the tiebreaker.

The Jefferson boys and girls track and field teams both won the Class 2 District 1 meet May 10 at Scott City High, reclaiming their titles from last year. The Blue Jays were led on the boys side by junior sprinter Matthew Waltman, who overcame an injured knee to win the sprint trifecta, the 100-meter dash (11.22 seconds), 200 (22.30) and 400 (50.34), and ran the first leg on the second-place 4x800 relay (8:30.9), which also included Ethan McVey, Bryant Horn and Larry Lemons.
