    Having worked her way through the ranks, Melinda Vega recently found herself recognized as the School Nutrition Employee of the Year. Vega has worked for the department for 15 years starting out as a general helper in the cafeterias, moving up to assistant cook, head cook and manager at a variety of campuses. She is now administrative assistant to the director, Jieun Pando. She has worked in the School Nutrition Office for eight years. Winning the award was really neat, she said.

    Unlike Marty McFly, the main character from the “Back to the Future” movies, kids in Ector County ISD’s Camp SIP stayed closer to home although they did explore past and future worlds. A showcase and closing ceremony of what campers learned was presented to parents Thursday at Deaderick Auditorium for middle school campers and the Blackshear Elementary gym for elementary students. Awards were given and a video presented of all the activities kids took part in.

    Medical Center Hospital Junior Volunteer Miguel Campos is heading to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders June 25-27 at the University of Massachusetts campus in Lowell, Mass. The 16-year-old rising senior attends Odessa Collegiate Academy. The Congress is a “verified honors-only program for high school students who are dedicated to the service of humanity through medicine, either as physicians or in scientific research.

    At least 100 people turned out for the groundbreaking for Ector County ISD’s new Career & Technical Education Center at 2355 Martin Luther King Jr. St.When completed, the CTE Center will be another choice high school for the students of Ector County and the seventh ECISD high school. Four hundred (400) students will attend this school full-time, and another 2,000 will travel to and from the center each day for CTE electives.

    University of Texas Permian Basin will be hosting GET PHIT Boot Camp again this year. The grant-funded, in-person camp is set for July 21-Aug. 1. The acronym stands for Gaining Equity and Training in Public Health Informatics and Technology. The grant is part of the Public Health Informatics & Technology Workforce Development Program (PHIT).
