UK companies are outperforming global peers when it comes to tackling forced labour in their supply chains, as the UK marks 10 years since the landmark Modern Slavery Act, according to a new benchmark from investment manager CCLA. The aim of the benchmark, in which the 100 largest global companies are assessed, is to empower faith investors and institutions with a renewed attention to banish modern slavery. Global firms scored an average of 30/62, compared to 36/62 for UK companies.

Employment rates are historically high but even so, poverty has been rising steadily in the UK for two decades, according to a new SVP report, The hidden crisis of in-work poverty – a frontline perspective. The society records a “significant increase” in working individuals and families needing support across England and Wales and challenges the assumption that “work alone is a reliable route out of poverty”.

A free teaching toolkit on the Catholic Church’s approach to ecology has been re-launched by St Mary’s University, Twickenham, ahead of Laudato Si’ Week which begins tomorrow. The Laudato Si’ Champions Project at St Mary’s University, which draws from the , offers a six-lesson toolkit which helps teachers explore the intersection of Catholicism and ecology with students of all ages.

Fr Dominic Robinson SJ, parish priest at Farm Street Jesuit Church in London, told a panel on exploring the moral and spiritual challenges of artificial intelligence, “We should not be fearful of AI.” First speaker at the Farm Street event, organised in collaboration with the Catholic Union, was Jen Copestake, a correspondent with CGTN Europe and a parishioner at Farm Street, who pointed to the growing use of AI and robotics in areas such as healthcare.

Pope Leo XIV spoke out against hatred and violence and indicated the direction his papacy will take – one of love under the authority of the charity of Christ. In his homily at the Mass in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican this morning that marked the official beginning of his papacy, Pope Leo spoke of the “self-sacrificing love” of St Peter. “Peter must shepherd the flock without ever yielding to the temptation to be an autocrat, lording it over those entrusted to him,” he said.
