A teaching union has reopened nominations for its general secretary following a backlash by members against the appointment of a militant socialist leader. The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) appointed Matt Wrack, a hard-Left trade unionist and former leader of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), without opposition as its general secretary on Tuesday despite him having no formal experience in teaching.

The hottest day of the year so far is expected this week with temperatures set to hit 28C (82F), the Met Office said. The UK could see temperatures of 24C or 25C on Monday, which will rise each day until a peak on Wednesday or Thursday of 28C, with a small chance of seeing 29C. There will also be widespread sunshine, with only the northern parts of Scotland expected to see some rain.

Leanne Williams, his wife, likened the scene to the Wizard of Oz."The pool and trampoline had been completely crushed and there was smashed glass and wood everywhere from the summer house," she said. Mrs Williams, 43, had initially lodged a complaint in May 2019 after reporting that large branches from the tree were falling into the garden.
