It was a dramatic finish to the Class 3A-District 11 semifinal game between the Avon Park Red Devils and Aubrey Rogers Patriots (Naples) Tuesday night. The Red Devils and Patriots were knotted up at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh at Charles R. Head Field in Avon Park when Maddox Pollitt got a walk-off sacrifice RBI to clinch Avon Park’s spot in the championship game with a final score of 2-1.

It was a battle on the mound Tuesday night when the Avon Park Red Devils hosted the Hardee Wildcats at Charles R. Head Field. Going into the bottom of the seventh down 1-0 the Red Devils weren’t going down without a fight and got the walk-off win with a final score of 2-1 to expand their record to 17-6 in the season. The Wildcats showed their claws in the top of the fourth when Leo Marrerro hit a line over the center field fence to give Hardee a 1-0 lead.

On the softball diamond at South Florida State College in Avon Park, the Panthers dominated against the Hawkeye Community College Redtails of Waterloo, Iowa. In the doubleheader the Panthers took both games, 4-0 and 6-1, respectively. South Florida’s record is raised to 6-26 on the season. Panthers 4, Redtails 0In the first game of the evening South Florida blanked Hawkeye behind the pitching of Joey Gray.

A little rain didn’t cool down the heated rivalry between the Avon Park Red Devils (11-5) and Sebring Blue Streaks (10-3). The opponents went head-to-head at Charles R. Head Field in Avon Park in what was the second meeting between the longtime foes this season. In their first meeting the Red Devils were victorious (1-0) but the Blue Streaks got their revenge with a 6-3 win on Thursday.

The Avon Park Red Devils boy’s tennis team struggled on their home court against the LaBelle Cowboys. The Cowboys won all three of the singles matches plus the doubles match. Though the Red Devils fell to the Cowboys Coach Tosin Awomewe thought the guys did well. “Head Coach Mrs. Welch and I have been emphasizing a more tactical approach with both the boys’ and girls’ teams,” he said. “This new strategy is something we believe will lead to long-term improvement.
